The Importance of Correct WC Facilities For Disabled People 
As a disabled person, I find it disturbing that many hotels, restaurants and shops that offer disabled WC facilities are not only falling under there duties of the Disability Discrimination Act but are in fact putting disabled people at risk of accident or injury. 
Disabled WC’s have very specific requirements under the DDA. These requirements are not pie in the sky over the top rules and regulations implemented by those upstairs in government. 
A disabled WC compartment has to meet the needs of all disabled people and offer safe transfer both on and off the WC for wheelchair users. The serious lack of facilities such as drop down grab rails and support rails not only makes using these facilities difficult if not impossible, it makes them dangerous and puts the disabled person as risk. Further more it puts the company that offer such facilities responsible and ultimately to blame should any claim of injury arise! 
The regulations of disabled WC’s and the facilities offered are very extensive and should never be installed without professional instruction or advice.   
Apart from offering safety those installing such facilities need to remember that the DDA requires that for personal hygiene reasons it is important that lavatory accessories such as wash basins, dispensers for soap, toilet paper and paper towels should be installed and readily accessible to a person in a wheelchair and from the WC seated position. Emergency pull cords need to meet specific requirements and be reachable from both the WC seated position and the immediate floor area. 
The above only touches on the many requirements of disabled WC facilities, they are extensive and need to be in place and correctly fitted to offer those using such facilities safety and those offering the service protection in the event of a claim against them should an accident happen.  
Maybe the needs of disabled people wont make those responsible think, I guess not even the 64 billion pound per year spending power will make them think, but maybe, just maybe the threat of a massive court settlement should an accident result will?

Once I am invited to conduct a training session for a senior management team of one leading service industry in Thailand on a topic of service management.  The team opens the training by telling me that they are the second best compared to another brand who is also the leading brand in Thailand in terms of “service excellence”.  I ask how they know and what are the criteria used to measure that outcome.  The director who is responsible for quality assurance answers me that they have the international external auditor from abroad to audit their staff on a yearly basis.  The result said almost 100% of our staff do everything we ask them to do, basically staff do comply with the standards. Moreover, they as a management walk around and witness that those good service behaviours are being practiced.  Sound good, isn’t it?
So, my hypothesis is;
- The auditor will still give full score if their staff “wai” (Thai greeting gesture) to the guest with a long face.  (As a trainer / consultant, I will surely not recommend this type of audit for the service excellence aspect).
- And, normally Thai staff will “Wai” and bend their heads down to a manager rather than to a guest.  That is a Thai hierarchical practice because the job security is traditionally not very much depending on performance but it depends on how obedient one is onwards his/her boss.   I experience many times that between a guest and a manager, Thai staff will surely greet the manager first.  That is why many managers are so sure that they staff comply with set standards.
I say to this group of senior managers in the session that “if the-mentioned audit outcome and the management experience strongly urge you to believe that your service is good enough.  As a customer, I will say wrong”.   I like to comment here two things: firstly, some Thai owner / managers believe in imported products from a handbag to a consultant.  A consultant who makes Thai people believe through their nice beautiful accent and a sharp nose that they know everything.  I wish actually to ask – will the audit outcome truly reflect guest satisfaction?  The international external auditor must have this answer.   Secondly, most obstacles of Thai’s service come from its cultural issues.   Therefore, by now, Thai managers should realize that improvement in service and changes in attitude are to “start” with the boss and therefore the improvement will “stop” with the boss too.

Competence relates to the quality of evidence obtained, and is evaluated in terms of relevance and validity. The relevance of evidence should address and meet the audit objective being tested. Let us illustrate the audit of inventory to expound on this characteristic. The auditor should not only satisfy himself with the reconciliation of inventory amounts with the books of accounts with supporting documents such as purchase orders or delivery receipts. To test if the inventory is properly accounted, the auditor would first review the inventory-taking procedures then observe the actual counting to get first-hand evidence that the procedures are properly observed. 1. Evidence obtained from independent sources outside the client provides greater reliability than that secured solely within the company. This is so due to the fact that the client has no hand in the processing of these evidences.  As such, bank statements are more reliable than the balances appearing in the cashbooks as much as billing statements from customers/clients are more reliable than vouchers or purchase orders.
2.  Accounting records and other internally generated documents are more reliable if they are a product of an effective internal control. If the processing of cash receipts transactions employs the proper segregation of receipt and recording duties, the possibility of collusion or any form of irregularity will be minimized as there is an automatic check-and-balance control. The process will have to go through numerous personnel, which will ensure the correctness of the transaction.
3. Direct acquiring of evidence by the auditor himself is more persuasive than information obtained indirectly. This is the main reason why auditor uses the audit technique of confirmation in auditing receivables and loans where they sent a letter to the debtor or creditor to verify the amounts reflecting in the financial statements.
In addition to these generalizations, the competence of evidential matter is increased when the auditors are able to obtain additional information to support the original evidence. In testing the ownership of land declared in the financial statements, the auditors would naturally inspect its title. If they could secure a certification from the local government’s Assessor’s Office or Registry of Deeds that the said land was under the name of the client, the evidence gathered is more persuasive, perhaps convincing, rather than basing the evaluation on the title alone.

If you live in a trailer, it is particularly important that you have a storm shelter or know of a community shelter in the area where you can take cover.
If you don’t have a storm shelter, there are certain places in your home that are safer than others. A basement or room that is underground and preferably without windows is the next best thing to a reinforced shelter. If there are windows in the basement, cover them with plastic if you have time and stay away from them.
If there is no basement in your home, you should go to an interior room that is on the lowest level of the home. A closet or bathroom is best. You can also go to an interior hallway in a building on the lowest level. You should stay away from windows, exterior walls and doorways. Stay out of large rooms such as auditoriums, the middle of the grocery store or large hallways. The smaller the room or hallway the better. If there is a heavy piece of furniture in the room, take cover under it.
Protect your head and body with pillows, blankets or mattresses. If you have small children or pets with you, make sure they are well protected as well. Keep a flashlight and a cell phone with you, preferable in your pocket. That way if you are trapped you can call someone for help and you will have a flashlight which will help you be found. A battery powered radio or television is also good to keep in your safe place to keep yourself informed.
Remember to never try to outrun a tornado. Do not stand by a window or out on the porch and try to video it. Get to your storm shelter or safe place immediately if you are under a tornado warning.
